All 5 of us travelled in one car from Paraparaumu at 7.30am to the Kaitoke carpark and started walking around 8.30am. The first 25 minutes we climbed up 470m to Puffer Saddle. We were welcomed by loud cicada’s music as our background (our trip leader, Rob, told us this was the horrible bit) and down to Smith Creek (the nice bit, with bush and red beech forest).

John and I set off from Raumati at the leisurely time of 9am on a Tuesday and started walking from Poads Road end about an hour later.

Ten intrepid Parawai trampers assembled at the end of Scotts Road just in from Tokomaru for an 11 hour big adventure heading into Punga Hut, onto Mangahao Biv and return. Please note that the author tends to emphasise certain aspects of this trip for humour. It was not quite as bad as made out.

There were just the 3 of us on the Tararua Challenge trip to visit Renata Hut, Elder Hut and Alpha Hut. This made it easy for transport as I had voluntold my son he would be dropping us off and picking us up. With the water tank at Elder Hut being out of commission, due to a problem with the water tanks tap, we had to take any water we needed for overnight with us.

We met up at 7:30am and travelled in three vehicles to the track behind Shannon. We drove past the Mangaore Village for around 5km and past the Mangahao Power Station.

Well, one has to do one’s bit for this Tararua hutbagging challenge thingie, so I put my hand up for this one. Well, initially just for Blue Range and Cow Creek, but when my Ruahine friend, Chris (whose only previous Tararua venture was my Tutuwai trip last year) suggested we make it into a circuit, adding Mitre Flats was an easy decision.

Julie, Jolan and I set off at 10:30am from Kapiti on Monday for our three-day tramp and called in at the Clareville Bakery for the mandatory lunch stop, arriving at the road end about 12:45pm.
